Porobleno Project - Ukraine

Good Ancestor provided seed funding for this Ukranian project

The popular science podcast and YouTube channel "Porobleno" is devoted to anthropological research, traditional culture, and magical thinking and their influence on Ukrainian everyday life now.

The purpose of the project:

During the last decades, pseudo-knowledge about Ukrainian culture and traditions, often based on neo-pagan / new-age myths and beliefs, has been actively spreading in Ukraine.

There has been an increasing interest in everything Ukrainian among Ukrainians, caused by the active phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war. That is why we, as anthropological researchers, consider it necessary to spread and popularize verified information about Ukrainian traditions and to deconstruct the myths about Ukrainian culture. This information is based on scientific research, particularly on our field expeditions and archival work. We also attract other researchers to our show as guests.

The mission of the "Porobleno" project:

This is the first popular science podcast and YouTube channel about Ukrainian culture, which has a high level of expertise given by anthropologists and folklorists. The podcast easily and informatively describes and analyzes traditions and practices, magical thinking, and their influence through popularizing science, knowledge, and rational thinking.

The project aims to:

  • reach a diverse audience of Ukrainian society,
  • promote the scientific approach while discovering local culture,
  • reveal new names of researchers of history and culture to the wider audience;
  • create a platform for popularizing modern culture studies;
  • project an acceptance of regional cultural features and discover their diversity;
  • encourage critical thinking and getting familiar with own cultural roots through our verified content.
